Scabrid, sprawling, densely leafy, aromatic shrub to 1 m, sometimes thinly woolly on young parts. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, margins revolute, usually sharply toothed. Flower heads radiate, solitary at branch tips, yellow. Achenes reniform, warty, ± 4.5 mm long. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Asteraceae: Osteospermum L. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 402-406. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Osteospermum ilicifolium is characterized, as the specific name indicates, by its more or less Ilex-like, subcoriaceous leaves. The breadth of the leaves varies enormously in one and the same individual as well as in separate individuals. On Table Mt. in the Cape district there are extremely broad-leafed forms with broadly ovate leaves up to 4 cm broad, and in Bains Kloof in the Paarl district extremely narrow-leafed forms with narrowly lanceolate leaves hardly 0.5 cm broad are found. These differences in the shape of the leaves are in this case probably due to the habitat alone. The plant has a strong scent, and at least when dried feels rough from hard, raised points or short, rigid hairs, which are glanduliferous. From: Norlindh, NT. 1943. Studies in the Calenduleae: 1. Monograph of the genera Dimorphotheca, Castalis, Osteospermum, Gibbaria & Chrysanthemoides. C.W.K. Gleerup, Lund. [All rights reserved]
