Diagnostic description

This plant is a perennial herb or suffrutex, with stem and branches at first ascendent but finally prostrate. It has either only obovate leaves or both obovate and oblanceolate leaves. The ray flowers are white above, and violet, pale pink or mauve beneath. The disc flowers are reddish purple with narrowly triangular to lanceolate, acute lobes. A more or less large number of the inner disc flowers have lobes with a usually small, sometimes hardly visible, hooded apical swelling on the outer surface. The achenes are narrowly triangular-obovoid, with two acute outer angles and a sometimes blunt inner angle. The angles form three small tubercles on the top of the achenes. From: Norlindh, NT. 1943. Studies in the Calenduleae: 1. Monograph of the genera Dimorphotheca, Castalis, Osteospermum, Gibbaria & Chrysanthemoides. C.W.K. Gleerup, Lund. [All rights reserved]

Habitat

Occurs on sand dunes as well as on low grassy hills near the shore. From: Norlindh, NT. 1943. Studies in the Calenduleae: 1. Monograph of the genera Dimorphotheca, Castalis, Osteospermum, Gibbaria & Chrysanthemoides. C.W.K. Gleerup, Lund. [All rights reserved]
