Annual herb with ramified, glabrous, slender branches. Leaves pinnate or bipinnate, sparsely divided, with acicular segments. Flowers in compound umbels, with short rays and pedicels. Bracts entire, acicular; bracteoles entire. Calyx lobes triangular. Petals white, sometimes flushed pink. Styles short, divergent. Stylopodia low-conical. Fruits transversely oblong (wider than long), glabrous, markedly ribbed; commissure narrow. Carpophores bifid. Ribs very prominent, obtuse. Rib oil ducts 5, small, invariably present. Fruit broadly ellipsoid to almost round, slightly laterally compressed, 1.251.75 mm long; mericarps each with 5 strongly protuberant, broad, pale longitudinal ribs; vittae minute, in furrows and 2 on face. The species has been included in Apium (as Apium lepto-phyllum) but has long cotyledons (round in Apium), subrhomboidal pollen (oval in Apium) and a chromosome number of n = 7 (n = 11 in Apium). The close similarity between this species and Apium species appears to be superficial only. Morphometric studies showed that the two genera are quite distinct. The linear leaf segments and 2-3-rayed sessile umbels were used as key characters to distinguish Cyclospermum from Apium (the latter with non-linear leaflets, mostly distinct peduncles and 4-13-rayed umbels.
