Paranomus adiantifolius Salisb. ex Knight
EN Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

An erect sparingly branched shrub when young, branching more freely when old, 1-1.7 m high. Stems shortly tomentose, glabrescent. Leaves both dissected and entire, the latter below the inflorescence, transition from the one type to the other gradual. Entire leaves 12-35 mm long, coriaceous, glabrous, the margin cartilaginous, the petiole adpressed about as long as the lamina, lamina rhomboidal or triangular, the width often exceeding the length. Dissected leaves up to 90 mm long, glabrous, rather sparsely lobed for about one third of the length; apiculum pale, obtuse. Peduncle short or none, sterile bracts when present about 9 mm long, subulate, channelled, with a small apiculum, minutely ciliate near the base. Bracts subtending the partial inflorescences about 8 mm long, subulate near the base of the spike, becoming lanceolate higher, somewhat channelled, shortly tomentose on the lower third, glabrous towards the apex. Floral bracts about 6 mm long, obtuse, obovate, oblong or broadly elliptical, densely tomentose. Perianth in the mature bud about 13 mm long, segments pink within, densely covered with upwardly directed, shining white hairs without, all segments similar. Style about 11 mm long, glabrous and 4-angled below the pollen presenter, cylindrical with long soft hairs in the middle and shorter hairs near the base; pollen presenter dark red, as broad as long, much wider than the style, the top conical with 8 blunt ridges running downwards, narrowing abruptly at the base from which some hairs project. Seed about 7 mm long, 4 mm wide, ellipsoidal, brown, shining, glabrous. From: Levyns, MRB. 1970. A revision of the genus Paranomus (Proteaceae). Contr. Bolus Herb. 2: 3-46. [All rights reserved]

Sparsely branched shrub to 1.7 m. Leaves dimorphic, the lower dissected, the upper obovate, margins cartilaginous.
