ZODATSA
Morphological description

Silver kob has a silvery head and body which becomes greenish brown with a bronze shine dorsally and white below. The inside of the mouth is white to pale yellowish grey and the peritoneum is white. The body depth is 3.6 to 4.2 times SL and peduncle length is 12-15% SL, and peduncle depth is 58-74% peduncle length. Pectoral fin reaches on or beyond vertical at tip of pelvic fin (Heemstra and Heemstra 2004).

Global distribution

Endemic to southern Africa from northern NAM to southern Transkei (Griffiths and Heemstra 1995, Kirchner 1998).

SA distribution

As above. Three separate stocks have been identified in SA waters. One in the SEC, one in SC and one in SWC (Griffiths 1996a, 1997a). Furthermore, a separate stock was identified in NAM (Kirchner 1998, Kirchner and Voges 1999).

Movement

Silver kob migrates seasonally from the inshore region in summer to offshore in winter (Griffiths 1997a, Kirchner 1998).

Trophic strategy

Adult silver kob preys on pelagic fish, shrimp and squid (Heemstra and Heemstra 2004) but the diet of juveniles in unknown.

Reproduction

Silver kobs are gonochorists that spawn inshore throughout the year but the main spawning season is from August to December with a peak between September and November (Griffiths 1997a). Females reach an age at 50% maturity after 1.3 years in the southeastern cape, 2.4 years in the southern cape and 1.5 years in Namibia (Griffiths 1996a, Kirchner 2001). They reach a length at 50% maturity in males at 290mm TL in the southeastern cape; 325mm TL in the southern cape and 360mm TL in Namibia. Females at 310mm TL in the south eastern cape, 375mm TL in the southern cape and 350mm TL in Namibia (Griffiths 1997a, Kirchner 2001).

Uses

An important component of the commercial skiboat fishery in the SWC, SC and SEC (Smale and Buxton 1985, Griffiths 1997a,c, Brouwer and Buxton 2002). A sought after species for many recreational boat-based anglers, particularly in the SEC (Brouwer and Buxton 2002, Donovan 2010). Important component of the bycatch of inshore trawlers along the SEC coast (Griffiths 1997c, Attwood et al. 2011). The inshore trawl catch is in the same order of magnitude as the linefish catch, but is not restricted by size limits. Caught from the shore mainly to the west of Cape Agulhas (Brouwer et al. 1997, Brouwer and Buxton 2002), important in both the commercial and recreational linefishery in NAM (Kirchner 1998, Kirchner and Beyer 1999, Holtzhausen et al. 2001). Caught in the beach seine-net fishery in SWC (Lamberth et al. 1997).
