Morphological description

Plant highly caespitose, forming dense mats. Sheath papery, white or yellowish-tan, unspotted, persistent, rather firm. Bodies 5-15 x 3-8 x 3-8 mm, narrowly obo-vate, top truncate to deeply concave, round in outline or elliptic when paired; fissure long, impressed, whitish, papillate. Epidermis glabrous, often glossy or blank, dull grey-green (Komkans) to deep grass-green or purple (Holrivier) sometimes with a transient greyish bloom, unspotted or vaguely spotted, spots never prominent. Flowers autumnal, diurnal, scentless. Calyx-tube 4-8 mm long, thin, whitish, with 4-5 green sepals 3 mm long, corolla-tube 8-15 mm long, whitish becoming magenta, or entirely magenta, petals (12-)15-25(-40) in 2-6 series, magenta, acute at the tips or spathulate, with an inner ring of white, yellow, or pink staminodes, these acute and very thin, rarely absent, stamens ca. 30, hidden at the base of the tube, rarely exserted; style minute with 4-5 stigmas, these 2-4 mm long.
