Morphological description

Plant highly caespitose, forming dense or lax mats or cushions. Sheath papery, whitish or pale brown, spotted, persistent, forming collars. Bodies 15-20 x 5-10 x 5-10 mm, narrowly obovate, top slightly convex, truncate, or rarely concave, round or elliptic in outline, keeled expressed rarely, fissure short, slightly depressed, papillate, surrounded by a translucent band. Epidermis glabrous or rarely finely papillate, pale blue-green to grey-green, sometimes reddish on the sides, sparsely or well dotted, dots never prominent. Flowers autumnal (aestival in a few populations), diurnal, scentless. Calyx-tube 4-8 mm long, thin, whitish, with 4-5, 2-3 mm long sepals, their translucent tips adhering to the developing corolla; corolla-tube 8-15 mm long, whitish becoming magenta, or entirely magenta, petals 15-40 in 2-5 series, to 18 x 2 mm, pink, magenta or rarely pure white, acute at the tips or spathulate, with an inner ring of white, yellow, or pink staminodes, these acute and very thin, rarely absent, stamens ca. 30, hidden at the base of the tube, rarely exserted; style minute with 4-5 stigmas, these 2-4 mm long. Habitat

It occurs on quartzite, calcrete, broken or powdery shale, and gneiss, in the open or in the shade of shrubbier mesembs (Ruschia cf. burtoniae, Lampranthus watermeyeri, Dicrocaulon spp., etc.). In the central Knersvlakte, it is frequently found near var. pearsonii, C. uviforme and C. subfenestratum. From: Hammer, SA. 2002. Dumpling and his Wife: New views of the genus Conophytum. Distribution

Extremely widespread and seems to be locally abundant throughout its range, which stretches from Papendorp and Vanrhynsdorp in the south to Garies, Gamoep, and the mouth of the Groenrivier in the north.
