PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / CARYOPHYLLALES / AIZOACEAE / RUSCHIOIDEAE / RUSCHIEAE / CONOPHYTUM / BILOBUM / BILOBUM / BILOBUM
Plant robust, caespitose, nearly stemless or shortly caulescent in age. Sheath brown to eggshell-white or ruddy, variably spotted from brownish tanniniferous idioblasts, smooth to asperulous, strigose, papery to leathery, persistent. Bodies 10-70 x 10-30 x 10-20 mm, cuneate-oblong, laterally compressed to subcylindric, free leaf tips 3-10 mm long, terete, oval or triangular in cross section, mildly keeled, keel margins green, reddish, or deep purple; fissure ciliate, gaping or not, often bordered by a windowed, rarely inflated or blistered, band which usually extends down the flanks. Epidermis glossily glabrous to velvety or harshly asperulous, whitish-green, yellow-green, glaucous, deep blue-green, brownish-green or rarely pinkish, spotless to heavily spotted, spots not at all raised. Flowers amongst the largest in the genus, autumnal or rarely aestival, diurnal, scentless. Calyx-tube 3-10 mm long, herbaceous, with 4-7 sepals to 6 mm long, 3 mm wide, rapidly turning from green or reddish to black; corolla-tube exceeding the calyx-tube, petals 24-60 in 2-4 series, to 25 mm long, 3 mm wide, pale yellow to deep golden, often tipped reddish, stamens numerous, 4-6 seriate, 4-15 mm long, filaments green or tawny yellow, anthers to 2 mm long, deep yellow; style 1-10 mm long, stigmas 5-8, equalling the stamens or exserted beyond them. Capsule to 6 x 6 mm, woody, deep brown to maroon or blackish, persistent; seeds very numerous, 0.65-0.85 mm long, tuberculate to verrucate, elevations coarse, strongly raised, very dark. Mesembryanthemum elishae forms neat clumps composed of many crowded growths. Each growth is from about two-thirds of an inch to nearly one inch high, nearly as much in breadth, and about half an inch thick, somewhat obovoid in side view, two-lobed at the top, with the lobes much compressed, as if pinched between the finger and thumb, keeled along the top, smooth, glabrous, of a slightly bluish-green colour, obscurely marked with scattered darker dots. The flowers are half to three-quarters of an inch in diameter, bright yellow, expanding during bright sunshine and closing at night. The calyx-tube is variously exserted from the small orifice at the bottom of the notch separating the lobes of the plant, so that the calyx-lobes are sometimes much shorter than those lobes and sometimes overtop them. Petals 35-40, in about three series, united below into a tube, with the free part-about one-third of an inch long. Stamens numerous, yellow. Stigmas, 5-6, pale yellow. From: Brown, NE. 1916. Its nearest allies are M. bilobum and M. stylosum, but it differs from both of those in its much dwarfer and proportionately stouter growths, which form very compact or dense clusters. From Haworth’s description of M. nuciforme, I think that species must also be an ally of M. elishae, but I do not remember ever to have seen the true M. nuciforme. There are plants cultivated under that name in gardens that are most certainly not the plant to which Haworth gave the name, and according to the description can have no similarity to it.
