Morphological description

A moderately and often subdichotomously branched, up to c. 0.5 m high shrub. Stems ascending-erect, glabrous, leafy, becoming nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves alternate, spreading, triquetrous-canaliculate, mid-ribbed, acerose, 9-24 mm long, 0.5-1.5 mm wide, glabrous, acute-acuminate, pungent. Capitula solitary, sessile, terminal. Involucre campanulate, 5-12 mm wide. Involucral bracts 40-85, outer ovate, inner gradually longer and oblong-obovate with a somewhat spreading, scarious apical limb, innermost very narrowly obovate-spatulate, also with a spreading, scarious apical limb, up to 12.5 mm long, up to 2.8 mm wide, dorsally gland-dotted, obtuse-rounded. Receptacle flat, epaleate. Ray-florets 12-25. Tube cylindrical, 3.2-5 mm long, glandular. Lamina narrowly elliptic, 4.5-11 mm long, 1.2-2.5 mm wide, 4-veined. Style 4.5-6.5 mm long; style-branches 0.8-2.4 mm long. Achenes as in disc-florets. Disc-florets 30-60, perfect or 9-sterile. Corolla 3.8-5.5 mm long, 0.6-1 mm wide. Tube cylindrical, glandular. Limb narrowly cyathiform; corolla lobes 0.6-0.9 mm long, dorsally ± gland-dotted. Style 4-5 mm long; style-branches 0.3-0.7 mm long, apically and dorsally pilose-penicillate, rounded; stylo-podium distinct. Anthers 3.2-3.8 mm long; tails c. 1/5 of the length of the anther. Achenes almost terete, linear, 4-6 mm long, 0.4-0.6 mm wide, glabrous or occasionally with scattered hairs; pappus crownlike, of ± connate scales, up to 1.8 mm long. From: Bremer, K. 1976. Diagnostic description

This species is a low shrub characterized by needle-shaped, pungent, closely set leaves. They have probably developed from a broader form. Although the vascular anatomy does not give us any clue, it seems as if the ventral side has become much reduced, where after the margins have met, resulting in a unifacial leaf. Distribution

R. acerosa grows on sandstone rocks south of, in and around Lesotho. The apparent absence of the species on the inner mountains of Lesotho is probably due to insufficient collecting.
