PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / CARYOPHYLLALES / AIZOACEAE / RUSCHIOIDEAE / RUSCHIEAE / CONOPHYTUM / MINUTUM / LISABELIAE
The variety described here has been well-known in horticulture for many years under several names, principally C. nudum or C.minutum var. nudum. Perhaps the easiest way to describe var. lisabeliae is to differentiate it from Tischer’s taxon, which has green, lusterless bodies, while those of var. lisabeliae are dark purple with a pronounced lustre. In body dimensions and in ultimate cluster size, the new variety generally exceeds the old by two to three times (bodies to 30 mm long x 12 mm in diametre; clusters to 60 mm diametre) but the most obvious difference lies in shape: the bodies of var. lisabeliae have a concave to deeply concave apex, a mini-cup suited to the tip of a baby mesembophile’s little finger, those of var. nudum are flat-topped, dimpled by a short pale fissure. The taxa are united in their spotlessness (Tischer’s ‘nudity’) and are similar in flower, though those of the new variety are generally more vivid, with deep magenta petaloids and golden to ruby filaments. Var. lisabeliae is currently only known from a substantial population on Liebendal farm. Similar plants distributed by Rolf Rawe in the late 1960’s were originally said to have come from Groot Holbak (where Rawe collected his C. lambertense var. conspicuum but they actually came from somewhere near Holriver (Rawe, pers. comm.).
