Veltheimia bracteata Harv. ex Baker
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

The bulb is fleshy, purplish in colour within, but covered with a single layer of overlapping parchment-like tunics, composed of dried leaf bases. It is ovoid in shape with a diameter of up to 7 cm. The plant is never without leaves because the new season's leaves develop before those of the old season die back. The length of the leaves depends on the situation in which the plant is growing, as does the colour of the flowers. In exposed situations the leaves are much shorter than those of plants growing under trees, where the average length is about 32 cm. The leaves are paler and not as shiny on the lower surface as they are on the upper surface. The length of the peduncle also depends on where the plant is growing and it often reaches 50 cm in leafy glades. The flowers [are] borne in a dense raceme. The flowers are subtended by leafy bracts and should the tip of an inflorescence happen to touch the ground, roots are sometimes formed and the bracts at the apex develop into the first leaves of the new plant, which later develops a bulb. The fruit is an inflated capsule with three valves. The capsules are pale green, tinged with mauvy-pink. From: Batten, AU. 1988. Flowers of southern Africa. Southern Book Publishers, Johannesburg. Evergreen geophyte, 0.2-0.6 m high. Leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate. Inflorescence a many-flowered spike. Flowers spreading to nodding, pink or pale yellow, finely speckled with red; tube 20-35 mm long; tepals ovate, ± 3 mm long. Flowering time Aug., Sept. Fruit an ellipsoid, 3-winged capsule.
