Morphological description

Small annual, terrestrial. Rhizoids, capillary, simple, a few mm long, c. 0.1 mm thick. Stolons few, capillary, branched, a few cm long, 0.2-0.3 mm thick. Leaves few, 1-3 from the peduncle base and others on the stolons, petiolate, the lamina obovate or narrowly obovate, 0.3-2 mm wide, 1-nerved; total length 0.2-1.5 cm. Traps numerous on the stolons and leaves, ovoid, stalked, 0.6-1 mm long, the mouth terminal with a rounded, dorsal appendage and a similar but much shorter ventral appendage, both with radiating, comb-like rows of stipitate glands. Inflorescence erect, simple, solitary, 2-20 cm long. Peduncle terete, 0.3-0.6 mm thick, glabrous above, usually papillose near the base. Scales few, similar to the bracts. Bracts basifixed, ovate, with apex acute, c. 1 mm long. Bracteoles narrowly oblong with apex acute or obtuse, about as long as the bracts. Flowers 1-5(-8), distant; pedicels erect, terete, 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx lobes subequal, 1-2 mm long, the upper lobe convex, broadly ovate, with apex acute, the lower lobe slightly narrower, with apex obtuse or rounded. Corolla 3-7 mm long, white, lilac or violet, usually with a yellowish upper lip and a yellow blotch at the base of the lower lip; upper lip constricted above the middle, with the inferior part deltoid and the superior part much narrower, oblong, with apex truncate or emarginate; lower lip limb approximately circular, the base with two longitudinal, slightly raised, smooth or ± transversely wrinkled crests, the apex rounded, entire or obscurely crenate; palate margin papillose; spur narrowly conical-subulate, with apex subacute, straight or curved, about twice as long as the limb. Filaments slightly curved, c. 1 mm long, the anther thecae subdistinct. Ovary ovoid; style short; stigma lower lip semicircular, the upper lip much smaller, deltoid. Capsule globose, 1.5-2.5 mm long, the wall firm in texture, dehiscing by longitudinal, dorsal and ventral, marginally thickened slits. Seeds obovoid-conical, slightly angular, c. 0.25 mm long. Flowering more or less throughout the year but mainly during the latter half of the wet season. From: Taylor, PG. 1989. The genus Utricularia- a taxonomic monograph. Kew Bull., Addit. Ser. 14: 1-736.
