Morphological description

Shrubs 60 cm high, dense, robust, developing from a short stout stem at ground level. Branches numerous, very short, becoming stout, erect, pubescent when young eventually glabrous, usually arising in numbers of up to 12 from immediately below the previous years inflorescence. Leaves 2.3 cm long, 5 mm broad, much the same size in both sexes, oblanceolate, obtuse with a small blunt mucro, tapering evenly to the base, conspicuously twisted through 180°, thick, coriaceous, sparsely pubescent, ciliate, dark green, soon becoming glabrous. Involucral leaves similar to the stem leaves, more crowded, pubescent and purplish, exceeding the head in the female plant only. Male inflorescence 1.2 cm diam., globose, solitary, terminal, giving off a faint sweet smell. Basal bracts 9 mm long, 3 mm broad at the base, acute, tapering evenly to the apex, pubescent, pale or somewhat pink in colour, about 10 in number. Floral bracts 2 mm long, 1.2 mm broad, oblanceolate, pubescent on the rather distinct midrib and towards the apex, ciliate above. Floral bud 5 mm long, sparsely short-pubescent, somewhat enlarged at the apex, bent, exceeding its.bract by a long way. Perianth tube 2 mm long, almost glabrous, surrounded below by a tuft of long hairs. Claw 2 mm long, recurved 90°, sparsely short-pubescent. Limb 1 mm long, spathulate, concave, hooked, sparsely short-pubescent. Anthers 0.7 mm long, decumbent. Pollen triangular in polar view with sides 30 µ long, polar depth 19 µ. Stigma abortive, 0.7 mm long, clavate, acting as a pollen presenter. Style 4 mm long, glabrous. Hypogynous scales 1.5 mm long, acicular. Receptacle 9 mm long, 4.5 mm diam., clavate. Female inflorescence 1.1 cm diam., globose, solitary, terminal. Basal bracts similar to the male but the innermost becoming like the floral bracts. Floral bracts 4 mm long, 7.5 mm broad, broadly elliptic, short-pubescent and ciliate, purplish. Floral bud 4.5 mm long, transversely compressed, short-pubescent, glabrous at the apex, exceeding the bract by a long way. Perianth tube 4 mm long, glabrous below, sparsely short-pubescent above. Claw 0.5 mm long, recurved 90°, sparsely short-pubescent. Staminode 0.2 mm long. Ovary 1.2 mm long, glabrous, winged. Style 3 mm long, glabrous. Stigma 0.2 mm broad, terminal, truncate. Hypogynous scales 1.7 mm long, subulate. Receptacle 9 mm long, 1.5 mm diam., narrowly clavate or cylindrical. Nectar seen exuding copiously in both male and female. Mature female head a cone, 2.2 cm long, 2.1 cm diam., globose, purplish, with bracts broadly retuse and glabrous at the apex, pubescent below with flowers arranged in 8 ascending spirals with about 5 or 15 cm each, indehiscent. Fruit 5.5 mm long, 4-4.5 mm broad, heart shaped, compressed, narrowly winged, emarginate, slightly pitted. From: Williams, IJM. 1972. A revision of the genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae). Contr. Dioecious shrublet to 60 cm. Leaves oblanceolate, glabrescent, ± 22 mm long, involucral leaves lanceolate, softly hairy, cream-coloured. Flower heads 10-12 mm diam., slightly scented, bracts prominent, cream-coloured. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Proteaceae.
