Description :

  • Robust undershrubs, ± glabrous except for puberulous inflorescence; branches narrowly 4-winged by decurrence of petioles
  • Leaves opposite, petiolate, ovate to lanceolate, crenulate-serrulate, sometimes biauriculate at base
  • Flowers many, pendulous, pedicellate, in axils of bracts, grouped in terminal, secund, paniculate cymes
  • Calyx tubular, 5-partite, much shorter than corolla tube, chartaceous; tube short; lobes imbricate
  • Corolla tubular, irregular or subregular, 5-lobed, trumpet-shaped; tube long, incurved or ± straight; limb strongly oblique or ± equal; lobes short, obtuse, subequal, ± spreading, with stalked glands on inner face and margin; 2 posterior lobes exterior in bud
  • Stamens 4, didynamous, glabrous, exserted; filaments thickish, linear; arising a third to halfway down corolla tube; anthers erect, bithecate, with parallel thecae; connective thick; staminode obsolete
  • Ovary bilocular, ovoid; ovules many; style terete, glabrous, becoming long-exserted; stigma shortly bifid or subcapitate
  • Fruit an ovoid, ± oblique, septicidal capsule, with entire valves
  • Seeds subovoid, bluntly angular, subreticulately veined, minutely papillose; testa rather thickly spongy
