  • Leaves opposite, entire
  • Inflorescence terminal, axillary or on short lateral shoots, spicate or thyrsoid; bracts small
  • Calyx regular, hairy; lobes 5; tube shorter than lobes
  • Corolla 2-lipped, red, hairy; lips long; upper lip entire or minutely lobed, rugula distinct; lower lip 3-lobed, with a distinct keel and 2 channels on lower surface; aestivation ascending; tube cylindric, shorter than lobes
  • Androecium: fertile stamens 2, arising near base of corolla tube, exserted; filaments linear, sometimes adnate to corolla tube almost to mouth; anthers 2-thecous; thecae subparallel, muticous; staminodes 0
  • Pollen prolate, 2-4-colporate, with pseudocolpi; surface reticulate
  • Disc shallowly cupular
  • Gynoecium: ovary ovoid, with 2 ovules in each locule; style terete, running in rugula; style branches 2, equal, very short, broader than long
  • Capsule woody, oblong, stipitate, with inelastic placental bases
  • Seeds 4, planocompressed; surface rough and convolute or rugose
