  • Perianth (5)6-lobed or -partite, persistent; lobes or segments oblong, with inner 2(3) flat and outer 3 keeled or slightly winged
  • Stamens 8, arising near base of perianth
  • Ovary 3-angled with 3 styles; stigmas capitate or peltate
  • Fruit a trigonous nut, enclosed in persistent perianth
  • x = 10, 11 (high polyploidy)
