Description:

  • Perennial herbs or subshrubs
  • Leaves opposite or alternate, sessile or on narrowly winged petioles; blades ovate to narrowly oblong
  • Capitula discoid, florets 30-100; in corymbose inflorescences
  • Involucral bracts ± 15-30, eximbricate to weakly subimbricate, in 2 or 3 rows, usually broad
  • Receptacle rounded to conical, with small prominent scars
  • Corolla purplish pink, funnel-shaped with basal tube slightly constricted above nectary; lobes dorsally papillose
  • Style with base usually pubescent; branches with mamillose to papillose appendage
  • Cypselas narrowly cylindric, 4-angled, angles sparsely scabrid, faces black, gland-dotted
  • Pappus of many scabrid bristles, tips pink
