  • Inflorescences lax or dense terminal or axillary cymes
  • Flowers bisexual; bracts oblong, with hyaline, ciliolate margins
  • Sepals 9-13, free, spirally arranged, imbricate, green with hyaline margins
  • Petals 5-8, hyaline-membranous, much shorter than sepals
  • Stamens 5-8, alternating with petals
  • Ovary with many ovules; style 1 with 5 stigmatic branches
  • Fruit a capsule, 5-valved, surrounded by persistent sepals
  • Seeds many, reniform, reddish brown; testa minutely reticulate
