  • Leaves simple, mostly amplexicaul

  • Sepals spreading, not saccate
  • Petals clawed, white, pink or mauve
  • Stamens 6; filaments without appendages
  • Nectaries 4, semilunar, one on either side of each short filament
  • Ovary with 2-16 ovules
  • Fruit an angustiseptate, oblong to circular or obovate silicula, usually deeply emarginate; valves keeled, generally winged
  • Seeds ellipsoid; cotyledon accumbent
  • x = 7 (aneuploids, high polyploidy)
