  • Annual erect herbs
  • Leaves, at least upper ones, 3-5-lobed
  • Flowers axillary, solitary
  • Epicalyx 0
  • Calyx 5-lobed
  • Petals pink to mauve
  • Staminal tube divided at apex into many filaments
  • Gynoecium 10-20-locular with 1 ovule per locule; style branches as many as carpels, filiform; stigmas capitate or truncate
  • Fruit a disc-like to hemispherical schizocarp with ± 10-20, 1-seeded, laterally flattened mericarps with a long apical beak and with sides disintegrating to release 1 large seed
  • x = 15 (7, 9, 13) (polyploidy)
