Description:

  • Perennial herbs with tuberous or subwoody rootstocks, producing annual stems, or small shrubs
  • Leaves alternate, sessile, linear to elliptic, glabrous or with glandular hairs, margin flat, usually entire
  • Capitula radiate; many-flowered, solitary at end of long peduncles
  • Involucre campanulate; bracts in 3 rows, narrowly lanceolate, glabrous
  • Receptacle flat, paleate; palea boat-shaped
  • Ray florets female, in 1 row, fewer than disc florets; staminodes often present; corolla white, tube with linear-oblong or elliptic, 3-toothed lamina, longer than tube
  • Cypselas triquetrous
  • Disc florets bisexual; corolla purplish; tube somewhat campanulate above, with lanceolate lobes ± 1/3-1/2 as long as tube
  • Anthers linear, tailed at base; with lanceolate, apical appendage
  • Style terete; branches obtuse with hairs dorsally ending below apex as ring of longer hairs
  • Cypselas flattened to somewhat triquetrous, sparsely hairy
  • Pappus of scale-like awns
