Perennial herb, stock narrowly obconical, up to c. 15 mm diam. at crown, stems up to 1 m tall, solitary to several, simple to laxly branched in upper half, puberulous, hairs to 0.1-0.3 mm long, both balloon- and gland-tipped, distantly leafy to bracteate. Leaves mostly crowded at base of stem becoming distant and smaller upwards, opposite, bases connate, becoming alternate upwards, lowermost 30-120 x 4-22 mm, elliptic to oblanceolate, obtuse to subacute, base narrowed to a short petiolar part, margins entire to serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in a long narrow terminal thyrse, paniculate when stem branched, the branches ascending, cymules normally many-flowered, up to c. 40 mm long, mostly once-dichasial (occasionally twice-dichasial), thereafter monochasial, often becoming distant in fruit. Bracts (subtending lowermost cymules) c. 4-10 x 0.5-1 mm, linear. Peduncles (of lowermost cymules) c. 2-7 mm long, pedicels very short. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.2-0.4(-0.5) mm long, lobes subequal, 1-2.8 x 0.3-0.6(-0.8) mm, linear, acute to ± spathulate and thickened, hairy mainly on margins, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long, balloon-tipped, smaller gland-tipped hairs also present. Corolla tube 4-9 x 0.8-1.4 mm in throat, cylindric, expanded in upper part, limb bilabiate, 3-7.2 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.3-3 x 0.8-2.6 mm, anticous lobe 1.3-3.3 x 0.6-2 mm, all oblong-elliptic to subrotund, margins often revolute, dull yellow to orange or brownish-red, tube occasionally purple-tinged, tube and backs of lobes puberulous, hairs to 0.1(-0.2) mm, balloon-tipped, inside rarely with a few clavate hairs on posticous side, usually glabrous there, usually weakly bearded on anticous side. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.2-0.4 mm long, visible in mouth, posticous anthers 0.6-1.4 mm long, included, posticous filaments sparsely bearded, hairs often very few. Stigma c. 3-8 mm long, shortly exserted to just included. Style 0.5-1.5 mm long. Ovary 0.6-1.5 x 0.4-0.8 mm. Capsules 1.5-3.4 x 1.5-2.5 mm, (subject to galling, then larger), often glabrous, sometimes minutely glandular-puberulous (in addition to sessile shining glands often present along sutures). Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.4 mm, usually violet-blue, very rarely pallid. It clearly has weedy propensities, and may be found in flower in any month. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Leaves crowded at base; blade elliptic to oblanceolate, apex obtuse to subacute, base narrowed into short petiolar part, margins entire to serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers: many in long, narrow, terminal thyrse, becoming panicles when stem branches; inflorescence axis puberulous; calyx lobes with conspicuous balloon-tipped hairs; stigma much longer than style; corolla tube up to 9 mm long, limb up to 7.2 mm in diameter, all with lobes oblong-elliptic, margins revolute, tubes and backs of lobes puberulous; corolla dull yellow to orange or brownish red, tube sometimes purple-tinged; Oct.-May, but can flower all year. It is characterized by its small flowers (often small in the limb though the tube may be long) arranged in many-flowered thyrses, the individual cymules of which are normally well-spaced and almost invariably produce two lateral flowers at the first branching, and thereafter the branching is monochasial. Each monochasium tends to produce many, crowded, flowers, giving well-grown specimens a highly characteristic facies. In coastal Natal, the cymules may remain crowded and corymb-like particularly towards the tip of each rhachis, but there is no other significant difference from the typical plant, which also occurs in the area. Manulea parviflora has a remarkably wide geographical range, having been recorded from the highlands of Angola, then an apparent disjunction to eastern Zimbabwe, and south to the Transvaal, Swaziland, Natal, Transkei, and coastal Mozambique at least as far north as the Komati river.
