Morphological description

Erect shrub or shrublet, 0.3-1.5 m high, little-much ramified with usually few main branches and many short lateral branchlets and brachyblasts; young branchlets leafy, soon becoming nude, with ± rough, yellowish-brownish-grey-almost black cortex. Leaves erecto-patent-spreading, 0.5-3.5 cm long, usually tripartite from or above (sometimes below) the middle with the lateral lobes 2-3-forked, sometimes some leaves entire or bipartite; leaf segments filiform-linear, 0.2-2 mm wide, terete-flattened, coriaceous or slightly carnose, (indistinctly) midveined esp. towards the base, distinctly or minutely apiculate with a hardening, often white point. Peduncles erect or ascending from the young branchlets and brachyblasts, 0.7-6(-8) cm long, slender, 0.2-0.5 mm thick, smooth or striate, glabrous (rarely minutely tomentose when young). Involucre hemispherical or somewhat broadly cupshaped, (3-)5-8 mm in diam. Involucral bracts 5-9, connate at the base, ovate- lanceolate-narrowly ovate-oblong, 2.5-6 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, obtuse-subacute. Receptacle slightly convex, alveolate. Ray-florets 5-9. Tube 0.5-2 mm long. Lamina (narrowly) elliptic-oblong-narrowly oblong-obovate, 3-6 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, 4(-7)-veined. Style branches 1-1.5 mm long, obtuse. Disc-florets c. 8-35. Corolla 3-4.5 mm long. Tube 1-2 mm long. Limb 2-2.5 mm long; lobes 0.8-1.2 mm long. Anthers 1.5 -2 mm long appendage. Pollen grains 18.3-30.5 µ in diam. Style branches 0.3 -0.7 mm long, truncate or slightly convex. Pappus bristles 1-2 mm long. Shrub or dwarf shrub, up to 1.5 m high; twiggy. Leaves alternate, sessile, crowded at branch tips and short shoots; blade usually tripartite from or above (sometimes below) middle with lateral lobes 2- or 3-forked (as a whole 3- or 5-lobed), sometimes entire or bipartite, 5-35 mm long, segments filiform-linear, terete to flattened, apices distinctly or minutely white-apiculate; glabrous. Heads radiate; peduncles solitary, 7-80 mm long, lateral in upper leaf axils. Involucral bracts uniseriate, 5-9, connate at base, multi-veined, ecalyculate. Flowers: ray florets 5-9, female, fertile; disc florets 8-35, bisexual; all florets yellow; Mar.-Dec. Diagnostic description

Ssp. vulgaris is the most common and widespread subspecies of E. subcarnosus. It is well known under the name of E. multifidus, which has to be used for another species, however. Ssp. vulgaris is a very variable taxon, which is not surprising with regard to its wide distribution in different habitats. The leaves are mostly three- or five-lobed, but there is much variation in leaf-shape (from entire to 7-lobed leaves), often within one population. The leaf segments are sometimes very narrow and filiform (e.g., in the Auas and Otavi mountains in S. W. Africa), and sometimes rather wide and fleshy (e.g., in the coastal Namib of S. W. Africa). Strikingly small-leaved and short-peduncled forms, not unlike ssp. minor, occur in several areas (Kenhardt, L. Namaqualand and Calvinia Divisions). From: Nordenstam, RB. 1968. The genus Euryops I. Distribution

The distribution covers large stretches of the South African inland karroo areas, in the east extending into the Lesotho mountains, in the west approaching the coast in L. Namaqua-land Division. In South West Africa the subspecies in found on the highest mountains as well as in the Namib hinterland and on isolated mountains of the coastal Namib. In the southern karroo areas (Little Karroo, etc.) it is replaced by ssp. subcarnosus and in Botswana and adjacent areas of northern Cape Province by ssp. foetidus. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1968. General notes: On gentle footslope in red sand. Occurs commonly but is localised. Perennial, woody, indigenous, shrubby, erect plant, with ascending stem habit and pale green, fissured bark. Leaves are succulent, tubular, divided and appear somewhat sessile and fascicled on dwarf shoots. Flowers on long slender pedicles extended well beyond leaves.
