Morphological description

Dioicous, bright yellowish green-green. Stem and branches prostrate or ascending, stem irregularly branched, up to 6 mm long, 100-200 µ in diameter, stoloniferous. Leaves imbricate except in young branches, patent at an angle of 20-40°, oval, obovate or oblong-quadrate with apex subserrate or especially in young branches simply bilobed, slightly concave, both margins somewhat reflexed, entire except near the apex. Amphigastria small, of varying shape, sometimes slightly dentate. Marginal cells 20-26 µ, in the centre of the leaf about. 30 x 30-40 µ, cuticle strongly papillose (also in the cortical cells of the stem), walls thin, colourless, trigones of medium size or absent. Oil bodies about 5 µ in diameter, orange-yellow, about 10 per cell. Male bract with a large lobule, sheltering two antheridia. From: Arnell, SW. 1963. Hepaticae of South Africa.
