Erect to decumbent, unbranched to much-branched annual herb; stems to 1.25 m long, when young sparsely puberulous to tomentose or sericeous with spreading or downwardly bent hairs, with (rarely without) sparse to dense stalked capitate glands. Leaves sparsely sericeous-puberulous along veins and edges, sometimes with stalked glands towards base; petiole to 2(3) cm long; lamina narrowly ovate to ovate or narrowly elliptic (rarely lanceolate), largest 5-12(15) x 0.7-4(7) cm, (2)3-5 times as long as wide; apex acute to acuminate, base attenuate, decurrent. Flowers solitary or paired, in numerous axillary loose to dense (imbricate bracts) racemoid cymes, long and many-flowered downwards, gradually shorter upwards, sometimes fusing to form an elongated terminal pseudo-raceme; either all bracts supporting flowers or ± 1-sided; main axis bracts foliaceous, raceme bracts ovate or elliptic to reniform (lower), (4)5-10 x 2-6 mm in middle of racemes, acute to acuminate (rarely subacute), straight if acute, recurved and sometimes twisted if acuminate, with or usually without distinct 'shoulders', lower with truncate to subcordate base, sparsely to densely puberulous to pubescent, usually with dense stalked yellow capitate glands, often sticky, often with long (over 1 mm) broad glossy hairs on underside, distinctly ciliate with broad glossy ciliae to 1.5 mm long; bracteoles linear or acicular, 1-1.5 mm long. Calyx 3.5-7.5 mm long, puberulous with non-glandular hairs and usually numerous stalked capitate glands, also with (rarely without) long broad non-glandular hairs to 1 mm long; lobes linear to filiform, acuminate to cuspidate, 1-veined. Corolla white to mauve, with pink lines on lower lip, 8-10.5 mm long, sparsely sericeous-puberulous and with scattered capitate glands; tube (3.5)4.5-6.5 mm long; upper lip (2.5)3-5 mm long, flat or slightly hooded; lower lip 3-7 mm long, broadly obovate, lobes 1-2 mm long. Filaments 2-3 mm long; anthers with a few hairs, thecae 0.5-0.75 mm long, lower with acute appendage c. 0.5 mm long.
