A moderately branched, up to c. 0.5 m high shrub. Stems ascending-erect, glabrous or tomentose, leafy, becoming glabrous and nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves alternate, erect-spreading-squarrose, sometimes recurved, flat and straight or somewhat irregularly bent, mid-ribbed, linear or narrowly obovate, 2-14 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, glabrous or sparsely pilose mainly marginally and on mid-rib dorsally, indistinctly glandular-punctate, acute, sometimes with hooked apex. Capitula 3-15 together in terminal cymes. Peduncles 2-10 mm long during flowering. Involucre urceolate-cyathiform, 2-4 mm wide. Involucral bracts 15-40, outer ovate, inner gradually narrower and oblong, innermost narrowly oblong-narrowly obovate and straight or apically somewhat spreading, up to 6 mm long, up to 2 mm wide, dorsally and apically gland-dotted, obtuse-rounded. Receptacle convex-conical, paleate. Paleae canaliculate, narrowly spatulate, 3.5-7 mm long, apically 0.3-0.8 mm wide, apically and dorsally gland-dotted, acute. Ray-florets 7-15. Tube cylindrical, 1.5-3 mm long, glandular. Lamina elliptic, 1.5-3.5 mm long, 0.8-1.5 mm wide, 4-veined. Style 2.5-4.5 mm long; style-branches 1.2-2 mm long. Achenes triquetrous, oblong, 1.4-2.3 mm long, 0.4-0.7 mm wide, ± densely pilose; pappus as in disc-florets. Disc-florets 16-35, perfect. Corolla 3-4.8 mm long, 0.6-0.9 mm wide. Tube cylindrical, ± glandular. Limb narrowly cyathiform; corolla lobes 0.4-0.7 mm long, dorsally ± gland-dotted. Style 3-5 mm long; style-branches 0.4-0.9 mm long, apically penicillate and truncate; stylo-podium distinct. Anthers 1.9-2.4 mm long; tails c. 1/5 of the length of the anther. Erect shrub, up to 1 m tall, densely leafy on young parts. Leaves erect or spreading, often recurved at tips, linear-oblanceolate, (5-)8-14 mm long, glabrous or subglabrous, often gummy above. Twiggy shrub to 1 m. Leaves oblong, erect or spreading, often recurved at tips, often gummy above. Flower heads radiate, few in dense, terminal umbels, with glandular-hairy florets, yellow. This species is closely allied to R. squarrosa and they are liable to be mixed up. R. genistifolia has typically spreading, linear, smaller leaves and urceolate-cyathiform, smaller, uniformly light yellowish brown involucres than R. squarrosa. Specimens with wider and somewhat irregularly bent leaves may be very similar to specimens of R. squarrosa with spreading leaves. They can be distinguished in the less slender achenes with longer pappus, more than 1/5 of the length of the achene, usually 1/3-1/2. Lastly, achenes of ray-florets are always ± densely pilose, never glabrous as they often, but not always are in R. squarrosa. R. viscosa is another closely related species. R. genistifolia, however, never has the thick, very glutinous leaves of R. viscosa and the capitula are usually smaller than in the latter species. This species varies considerably in leaf size and shape. The variation does not seem to be correlated with variation in other vegetative and floral characters.
