Morphological description

Herb, leafless at flowering; roots elongate, swollen and fleshy in lower part, white, in the (cultivated) specimen seen two only, one 25 cm the other 15 cm long (‘long and pencil-like’ collector). Leaves (from plant cultivated in shade house) 4, radical; vagina c.3 cm long, yellowish, gradually passing into petiole 2 cm long; blade bi- or tri-ternate, segments of last ternation with segments again divided into 3 lobes which are coarsely and sharply divided into 3-4 teeth; cutting of the last leaf finer. Flowering stem glabrous, scarcely more than 1 mm diam. near base, 30-40 cm high; leaves reduced to small acute scales 3 mm long, those in the lower half of the stem with suppressed axillary buds, those in upper part subtending branches which bear one or two scale leaves and arc either branched again or remain simple, in either case ending in a terminal umbel. Umbels with involucre of free lanceolate bracts 1 mm long and c.6 rays, 1.5-4 cm long; umbellules with involucel of free bracts c.0.75 mm long, usually about 6-flowered, sometimes 1 or 2 in an umbel on short rays and reduced to 2-3 flowers; pedicels usually just over 10 mm long. Sepals semilunar, minute. Petals very narrowly elliptic, c.1.5 x 0.25 mm, tip not inflexed. Stamens with filaments 0.75 mm long, tapering to fine point; anthers barely 0.5 mm long, 0.3 mm broad, broadly elliptic, with small apiculus. Stylopodia and styles 0.75 mm long, styles deflexed in fruit. Fruit (not fully ripe) 2 mm long, glabrous, often slightly curved through abortion of one mericarp. From: Burtt, BL. 1991. Umbelliferae of southern Africa: An introduction and annotated checklist. Edinburgh J. Bot. 48(2): 133-282. [All rights reserved]

Perennial herb, up to 0.4 m high. Leaf segments narrowly lobed, without a prominent midrib, lobes trisect, ultimate lobes 3- or 4-toothed. Pedicels at least 7 mm long. Sepals semi-lunar, up to 0.2 mm long, blunt, with rounded apex. Petals white to orange. Flowering time Nov.-Mar. (mainly Dec.). Fruit flask-shaped, 1.5-4.3 mm long. From: Winter, PJD. 2019. Apiaceae.
