Morphological description

Perennial herb, stock narrowly obconical, up to 5-10 mm diam. at the crown, stems (100-)300-600(-1000) mm tall, solitary to several, often simple, sometimes very sparingly branched in upper half, or occasionally paniculate, puberulous, hairs to 0.2-0.25 mm, balloon-tipped, minute gland-tipped hairs as well, these predominating on lower part of stem, nude to very sparsely bracteate or sometimes leafy throughout. Leaves often mostly radical, crowded in rosettes, opposite, bases connate, (30-)60-170 x 7-30 mm, elliptic to oblanceolate, obtuse or acute in smaller cauline leaves, base narrowed to a short petiolar part, margins entire to serrulate or serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in a long narrow terminal thyrse, sometimes branching into a panicle, cymules several to many-flowered, dichasial, becoming distant as the thyrse elongates. Bracts (of lowermost cymules) 5-20 x 1-2 mm, linear or oblong. Peduncles (of lowermost cymules) 1-5 mm long, pedicels very short or flowers sessile. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.5-1.5 mm long, anticous lobes 2-3.8 x 0.5-1 mm, lip split 1.2-2.5 mm, posticous lobes 1.8-3.8 x 0.4-1 mm, posticous lip split 1.5-3 mm, all lobes lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, puberulous, hairs to 0.2-0.25 mm, balloon-tipped, smaller gland-tipped hairs as well. Corolla tube (4.5-)5-8 x 1-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, expanded in upper part, limb distinctly bilabiate, 5-9.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-3.2 x 1.1-2.3 mm, anticous lobe 2.4-4 x 0.8-1.6 mm, all oblong-elliptic, margins often ± revolute, shades of dull yellow (fulvus or ochraceus) or orange-yellow, sometimes throat tinged orange, tube and backs of lobes puberulous, hairs to 0.1 mm, balloon-tipped, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs in throat, usually dark-coloured in lower part, lesser bands in lateral and anticous positions. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.4-0.7 mm long, visible in mouth, posticous anthers 0.8-1.5 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded, hairs usually dark. Stigma 3-5.5 mm long, shortly exserted to just included. Style 0.4-1 mm long. Ovary 1.2-1.5 x 0.6-1.1 mm. Capsule 3-5 x 2-2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.8 x 0.5 mm, pallid. Diagnostic description

Manulea crassifolia is characterized by its perennial habit, rosulate leaves, thyrsoid inflorescence, distinctly bilabiate calyx and yellow corolla. Manulea thodeana, here treated as a subspecies of M. crassifolia, differs principally in its longer indumentum; in addition, the flowers of M. thodeana are often livid or pure mauve. Commonly, in the species as a whole, the flowering stem is nearly nude and terminates in a long narrow thyrse; in the Cape in particular, but also elsewhere, the flowering stem is often leafy, and, almost exclusively in the Cape, it may branch into a panicle. Manulea rhodantha is a close ally, often mistaken for M. crassifolia and distinguished principally by its calyx, deeply divided into five subequal lobes. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Habitat

It favours damp grass slopes. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Distribution

Manulea crassifolia subsp. crassifolia is known mainly from Lesotho and the north-eastern Cape, with a range from about Harrismith (Platberg) and Clarens in the Orange Free State, just north of Lesotho's northern border, through the mountainous parts of Lesotho (and just entering Transkei on the upper slopes of the Drakensberg escarpment but apparently absent from the Natal Drakensberg where it is replaced by subsp. thodeana) to the mountains of the north-eastern Cape, from the Witteberg and Cape Drakensberg west over the Stormberg, Bankberg, Sneeuwberg and Koudeveldberg to the environs of Murraysburg, and south to the Kouga Mountains and the Groote Zwartberg.
