Morphological description

Shrubs up to 1.5 m, erect with many stems and a persistent rootstoc Basal shoots numerous, villous, arising particularly when the plant i damaged. Branches numerous, erect, glabrescent. Juvenile leaves oblon linear, apex acute with a small mucro, base twisted, sparsely villous, ciliat tufted with hairs at the apex. Leaves of male plants up to 2.6 cm long, 4 m broad, of female plants up to 3.8 cm long, 5 mm broad, in both sexes oblance late-linear, glabrous, rigidly coriaceous, scabrous, semi-patulate, acute or obtuse with a small blunt slightly recurved mucro, not much narrowed to th base. Involucral leaves uncrowded, revealing the head, becoming pale yellow, exceeding the head in the female plant by a long way. Male inflorescence 1.3 cm long, 1.1 cm diam., solitary, terminal, globose, giving off a foetid smell. Basal bracts 2.5-3.5 mm long, 1.8-2.2 mm broad, about 16 in number, lanceolate, dusky, glabrous, ciliate, a few small hairs towards the apex. Floral bracts 1.9 mm long, 1.5 mm broad, ovate, ciliate, densely pubescent. Floral buds 6 mm long, glabrous, bent, erect, apex swollen, exceeding the bract by a lo way, surrounded below by a small tuft of hairs. Perianth tube 2 mm Ion glabrous. Claw 2 mm long, recurved 180°, glabrous. Limb 2 mm long, glabrous, concave, hooked. Anther 1 mm long, curled upwards, stripped of pollen anthesis. Pollen triangular in polar view with swollen apices and sides 32 µ long, polar depth 20 µ. Stigma abortive, 1.5 mm long, clavate, entire, acting as pollen presenter. Style 4.5 mm long, filiform, glabrous, narrower abov Hypogynous scales 1.8 mm long, stout. Nectar seen filling the perianth tube above the hypogynous scales. Receptacle 8 mm long, 3 mm diam., clavate. Female inflorescence 7-15 mm long, 7-12 mm diam., globose, giving off a foetid smell. Basal bracts 4.5-5.5 mm long, 2.2-4 mm broad, about 38 cm number, lanceolate, glabrous, ciliate, dusky above with a few hairs near the recurved apex. Floral bract 3-3.5 mm long, 3.5-4.5 mm broad, orbicular, densely pubescent, ciliate. Floral bud 3.6-5 mm long, transversely compressed, minutely pubescent at the sides. Perianth segments imbricated forming a tube 2.5-3.5 mm long, laterals minutely pubescent. Claw 0.6-1 mm long, recurved 90°, glabrous. Limb 0.6-1 mm long, glabrous. Staminode 0.3 mm long, curled upwards, anterior absent or rudimentary. Ovary 0.7 mm long, glabrous, lobed above. Style 2.7-4 mm long, glabrous, narrowing below. Stigma 0.5 mm diam., oblique. Hypogynous scales 1 mm long, stout, yellow. Nectar seen at the throat of the perianth tube. Receptacle 5-10 mm long, 2-3.5 mm diam., clavate. Mature female head indehiscent, up to 2.4 cm long, 2.1 cm diam., globose, with bracts pubescent, dimpled, obtuse. Fruit 6-7 mm long, 8-9 mm broad, compressed, winged, dark brown, emarginate, pitted, with a median ridge and with a few minute hairs at the basal scar. From: Williams, IJM. 1972. Diagnostic description

Typical L. lanigerum is very closely related to L. modestum Williams and L. lanigerum var. laevigatum Meisn. but it differs in having a large persistent rootstock with several stems arising therefrom. L. modestum is a somewhat smaller shrub usually found in dense stands. In L. lanigerum var. laevigatum the leaves are more smooth and the habit more erect. From: Williams, IJM. 1972. Habitat
