Morphological description

Woody annual or biennial, herb, semi-succulent, glandular. Stem up to 2.4 m, with several branches, mealy-glandular only at the very top. Leaves long-petioled, petiole 3-9 cm long, lamina ovate to rotundate-ovate, some heart-shaped, 5-15 cm long and broad, subentire with a somewhat wavy margin, apex broad, base subacute to subtruncate, bullate, especially prominent during early development, the bulla is broad at the apex, subacute to subtruncate at the base, glandular and glaucous especially lower leaf surface, boldly three-nerved, veins sunk; grey-green. Flowers 2-1 in the axils of leaves and terminal; pedicels densely mealy-glandular, up to 4.2 mm long; calyx 3-4.2 mm long, sepals lanceolate, subequal; corolla ivory-white, with seven or eight purple lines in throat of lower lobe, 4.2-6.7 cm long, 6.3 mm wide near base, 3.3 mm wide at middle, tube subcylindric, not glandular, ± asymmetrically widened at base, extending very close to base in a substantial, sac-like spur; lobes 3-3.8 cm diam., ± 10.5 mm long and broad except lowermost somewhat longer; 1.5-2 mm long spiny projections emerge from base. Capsules coneshaped, oblong, 4-6 cm long, including beak, with two adaxial, recurved conical spines, one either side of base. Flowering time: year-round. From: Bedigian, D. 2013. Coarse, ± unbranched annual, up to 2 m tall. Leaves ovate, large, on long outspread petioles. Flowers clustered in leaf axils, trumpet-shaped, tube ± gibbous at base, narrowing to throat, greenish white, segments white, lined reddish in throat. Diagnostic description

Leaves orbicular, succulent, entire not lobed, bullate especially when immature; corolla elongated, white with purple lines inside mouth of lower lobe, inflated adaxially at base, capsules with two blunt spines; seeds deeply pitted. Habitat

Very common in a variety of different habitats (gravel plains, dune systems, inselbergs and escarpment) and a steep climatic gradient; the Kuiseb riverbed; in floods or on the lower slopes of hills (damp, sheltered places). General notes: Shaly/gravelly dark brown sand with red-brown rocks. Common but localised. Annual, biennial large herbs, in road reserve. Flowers white, tubular, tube up to 6 cm long. Corolla ± 2.3 cm in diameter at the tip, 5-lobed, creamy-white with cerise lines extending from within throat about 4 mm onto lowermost lobe. Seeds black, numerous. Pods woody, loculicidal, splitting longitudinally with two sharp terminal spines and two more at/near the base, projecting forward, about 5 mm long.
