Crassula tomentosa Thunb. var. tomentosa
NE Indigenous

Morphological description

Plants (0.2-)0.3-0.6 m high when flowering, with one to few rosettes, each with leaves tightly packed at first but elongating somewhat and rather loosely arranged when flowering. Leaves oblong-elliptic to oblanceolate, rarely obovate, 20-80(-100) x 10-25 mm, obtuse or acute, densely hairy, rarely almost glabrous and with thin marginal cilia. Inflorescence usually branched or lower dichasia stalked. Squamae oblong and slightly tapering towards base. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

No single character can be used to distinguish the forms of the two varieties. This is partly due to extreme plasticity of the species. An overall interpretation of the species becomes even less clear as hybridization seems to take place in several places along breaks in the north-south mountain ranges, for instance, along the Orange, Buffalo, Olifants and Hex River valleys.Plants of var. tomentosa are usually distinguished by their oblong squamae and the few rosettes which will elongate at least in part at flowering so that there is a gradual transition from the leaves in the rosette to those in the inflorescence. In south-western South West Africa/Namibia and the adjoining Richtersveld plants often produce more than one rosette and relatively broad leaves which approach those of var. interrupta but the squamae are always oblong. Similar plants are also found at the other end of the distribution range of the variety and particularly between Montagu and Laingsburg plants of var. tomentosa can only be distinguished by their robust habit. Unusual is also the extreme form with narrowly oblong leaves usually borne strictly in four ranks which grows along the coast between Cape Town and Saldanha Bay. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Habitat

Often growing in coastal sand formations, on lower gravelly slopes but also sometimes associated with larger rocks. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Distribution

Found in south-western South West Africa/Namibia and widespread along the western coast of the Cape Province to the Cape Pensinsula in the south, the western Little Karoo and mountains near Laingsburg in the east. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
