PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / FABALES / POLYGALACEAE / POLYGALEAE / MURALTIA / COLLINA
A woody divaricately branched shrub, up to 35 cm high. Young stems hispid-pubescent. Leaves spine-tipped, fasciculate, crowded near the ends of the branches: the primary 5.0-8.0 mm long, elliptical or oblanceolate, concave, the midrib evident below, acute, the margin scarious, long-ciliate: the secondary similar but a little narrower, almost flat, usually lacking a scarious margin. Bracts 0.7-0.9 mm long, ovate, concave, glabrous, sub-acute or obtuse. Flowers 4.0-5.0 mm long, pink, shortly pedicellate. Sepals glabrous, non-ciliate, apiculate; the outer ovate, concave, obtuse or acute: the inner slightly longer, elliptical, almost flat, half the length of the side petals or a little less. Side petals linear-lanceolate, tapering gradually to an acute tip, as long as or slightly longer than the carina. Claw of the carina about as long as the limb: the line of attachment of the crest vertical, reaching about three-quarters of the way up the carina, the width of the crest the same as or greater than the length of the carina, the upper and lower lobes similar. Ovary horned, with a few scattered hairs near the top: the style rather stout, the anterior branch minute or lacking, the posterior very short, the stigma ’close to the style. Capsule glabrous or nearly so, with slender horns about as long as the capsule. Seed globose, sparsely hispidulous, the caruncle with short broad obtuse membranous lobes. From: Levyns, MRB. 1954. The genus Muraltia. J. S. African Bot.: 1-247. [CC BY]
