Bobartia indica L.
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Plants 250-800 mm high, sometimes forming large clumps. Rhizome compact and corm-like, 5-15 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, terete, 1.2-3.0 mm diam., with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal tuft, terete, much longer than flowering stem, flexible and trailing, resembling stem but slightly thinner. Rhipidia 6 to 40 in a dense, ± globose head subtended by horizontally spreading, rigid, terete, leaf-like bract, 30-80(-200) mm long, expanded at base and partially sheathing, succeeding bract similar but smaller; pedicels villous distally; rhipidial bracts and spathes firm textured, grey-green, outer 8-18 mm long, ovate, inner 18-30 mm long. Flowers yellow; tepals free, elliptic, outer 19-28 x 6-14 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 4-6 mm long; anthers ± 6 mm long. Ovary exserted, smooth; style 1.5-3.0 mm long, branches 5-8 mm long. Capsules exserted, broadly ovoid, trilobed, smooth, 5-11 mm long, grey to blackish. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. Rhizomatous perennial, 50-100 cm. Leaves terete, longer than stems and trailing. Flowers in a dense inflorescence of 6-40 cymes, yellow. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Iridaceae. Diagnostic description

Distinguished from similar species with a narrow, leaf-like spathe subtending the synflorescence by the characteristically long, trailing leaves, much longer than the flowering stem. The dense, globose synflorescence of several to many, narrow rhipidia is subtended by two horizontally spreading, narrow, rigid, leaf-like bracts or spathes, the lowermost longest and the other much shorter and almost awl-like. The pedicels are characteristically densely villous distally. Bobartia indica is probably most closely allied to B. orientalis, which has leaves ± as long as the flowering stem, diagnostic short rhipidia with inner spathes 10-18 mm long and small, subglobose capsules mostly 4-6 mm long. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Habitat

On sandy flats or slopes, flowering mainly after fire. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Distribution

Endemic to the southwestern corner of Western Cape, South Africa, extending from Mamre and Goudini to Caledon, common on the Cape Peninsula. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
