Leaves 3-nate, 4-10 mm long, erect-spreading, linear, deeply sulcate to open-backed, showing a paler tomentulose undersurface, scabrid-puberulous above sometimes becoming glabrous and smooth. Calyx glabrous, roughly papillose, pallid outside, red within, the central line closely adpressed to the corolla, deeply 4-fid; lobes ovate, acute, 2-4 times the length of the tube, ciliate at the base, sides more or less strongly reflexed and the whole then tetragonous and 1.5-2 mm long, reaching generally about 1/2 the height of the corolla. Corolla 3-3.5 mm long, broadish-cyathiform or subcampanulate, tetragonous, glabrous, rosy; lobes about 1/2 as long as the tube not, or slightly, spreading, broad, obtuse. Anthers subexserted or only manifest, about 1 mm long, lateral, oblong, obtuse, muticous; pore 1/3 the length of the cell. E. canaliculata is one of the few species of Erica that may be classed as a `tree heath', since it may grow to a height of 1.9 m (6 ft) and more under favourable conditions. In this respect it is like E. caffra L. which may grow up to 20 and 30 ft alongside mountain streams. Flowering at all times of the year but mainly in summer. From: Baker, HA; Oliver, EGH. 1967. Ericas in southern Africa. Purnell, Cape Town. [All rights reserved]
