A small many-stemmed annual, 5-15 cm high. Leaves in whorls usually of 6, linear-filiform, 4-6 mm long. Flowers crowded. Pedicels 3-4 mm long. Perianth 2-3 mm long, the segments green with a narrow white margin, not imbricate, the edges pressed together and bent outwards. Fruit shining, black, pear-shaped, slightly compressed, at the top gradually narrowed to a smooth symmetrical beak. Fruit completely hidden by the enlarged bladder-like perianth and falling with it.
