Morphological description

Annual or short-lived perennial herb 15-75 cm high, from a woody rootstock to 20 cm long, much branched. Leaf apex attenuate and spinulose. Habitat

Within the dry bushland zone in seasonal rivers and lakes or in beds of temporary pools, on lake shore flats, but also on alkaline soils on volcanoes; on sandy, volcanic, saline or alkaline soils; may be locally common and form dense mats among grasses.
