PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / GENTIANALES / RUBIACEAE / VANGUERIEAE / BRIDSONIA / CHAMAEDENDRUM
Deciduous clonal geofrutices with ramets 5-16 cm tall; underground rhizomes ± horizontal, woody, up to 6 cm thick; plants glabrous to sparsely or densely strigose, but organ surfaces in hairy forms always clearly visible beneath the indumentum. Leaves opposite, simple, chartaceous or subcoriaceous, glossy in glabrous form; lamina, (12)30-60(130) x (5)10-20(35) mm, obovate-oblanceolate or rarely elliptic; apex obtuse and usually minutely mucronate, base cuneate to attenuate; glabrous or setulose; petioles distinct, 3-10 mm long; stipules 3-5 mm long, triangular with apex shortly subulate, basally vaginate-connate for c. 1 mm, becoming scarious at older nodes, densely and conspicuously white-hairy inside, hairs up to 2.5 mm long. Inflorescences axillary in the lower, often leafless axils just above ground level, opposite, three to eight flowered; peduncle 1-5 mm long with axes short and flowers mostly arising near tip of peduncle; bracts c. 1.0 x 0.5 mm, linear, usually present at one or two basal nodes, often absent elsewhere. Flowers pentamerous; pedicels 5-12 mm long. Calyx tube campanulate, (1.5)2.0(2.5) mm in diameter, glabrous or bristly pubescent; limb hardly exceeding the disc, c. 0.25 mm high; lobes 1.5-2.0 x 1.0 mm, not exceeding length of corolla tube, triangular-linear, obtuse, glabrous or sparsely hairy dorsally, erect and usually appressed to the corolla tube. Corolla in bud ± bulging and apically obtuse with tails short and hardly visible, glabrous or bristly pubescent; tube 1.5-2.0(4.0) mm long, cylindrical with a ring of whitish, ± straight and smooth, deflexed hairs, throat pubescent with spreading-erect, whitish, ± moniliform hairs; lobes pale green or yellowish green, (3)4-5(7) x 2-3 mm, triangular-oblong, apices ± cucullate, shortly apiculate with tails 0.5 mm or shorter, glabrous ventrally, hairy or glabrous dorsally. Stamens epipetalous, inserted at the throat; anthers 1.0-1.5 mm long, oblong or lanceolate, glabrous; filaments c. 0.25 mm long. Disc annular, glabrous. Ovary bi-(tri-)locular, each locule with a solitary pendulous ovule; style shortly exserted, 2.0-2.5(4.0) mm long, glabrous; stylar head complex c. 1.5 x 0.5 mm, cylindrical, deeply two- (three-)lobed. Fruit dorsiventrally flattened and two-lobed if both locules fertile, then up to 25 mm in diameter, lopsidedly globose and one-lobed if only one locule fertile, crowned with persistent calyx lobes, glabrous; brownish when ripe; pyrenes two or one (one aborted). [All rights reserved]
Dwarf shrub, up to 100 mm high. Leaves opposite; sessile; blade narrowly ovate to ovate, up to 120 x 45 mm, apex rounded, white setulose. Flowers: inflorescences borne in lower axils, few to many flowered; corolla tube ± 5 mm long, densely villous at throat, lobes slightly longer than tube, greenish; Sep.-Nov. Fruit subglobose or pyriform, up to 12 x 12 mm. From: Retief, E; Figueiredo, E; Meyer, NL. 2017. Rubiaceae. Dwarf shrub, 50-100 mm tall. Same as var. chamaedendrum but leaves white setulose. Flowers greenish. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Bridsonia differs from Pygmaeothamnus by often being smaller (5-16 vs. 10-30 cm high), with the leaves opposite (vs. predominantly ternate), petioles shorter (3-10 vs. 5-20 mm), stipules conspicuously hairy within (vs. hairs absent or inconspicuous), leaf apices not or slightly twisted (vs. usually twisted, often conspicuously so), inflorescences with fewer flowers (five to eight flowered vs. up to 40 flowered), flower buds obovoid with corolla lobes bulging outwards (vs. slender with corolla lobes hardly bulging outwards), flowers pale green or yellowish green (vs. white or greenish white), corolla tube 1.5-2.0 mm long (vs. c. 5.0 mm long) and the corolla lobes triangular-oblong and shortly (0.5 mm or less) tailed (vs. oblong-lanceolate with tails c. 2.0 mm long). Bridsonia differs from Eriosemopsis by lacking a thick indumentum, having leaf blades that are not bullate and in being smaller and distinctly clonal. It differs from Canthium in its dwarf (geofrutex) habit and clonal growth. It can be quite difficult to distinguish B. chamaedendrum from Vangueria pygmaea Schltr. [=Pachystigma pygmaeum (Schltr.) Robyns] and V. thamnus (Robyns) Lantz (=Pachystigma thamnus Robyns) in the field and herbarium. All three are small clonal geofrutices with similar macromorphological characters and their distribution ranges overlap. However, the genus Vangueria is characterized by a five-lobed stigma and a (tetra-)pentalocular ovary, whereas Bridsonia has a two-(three-)lobed stigma and a bi(tri-)locular ovary (Igersheim, 1993; this study). The calyx lobes of V. pygmaea and V. thamnus are longer (3.0-4.0 vs. 1.5-2.0 mm) and more spreading than in B. chamaedendrum. The corolla tubes are also longer in the two Vangueria spp., namely 3-8 vs. 1.5-2 mm in B. chamaedendrum. The inflorescences in the two Vangueria spp. are more branched with the bracts relatively large (3.0-4.0 x 1.5-3.0 mm) and quite conspicuous. Bridsonia chamaedendrum has inflorescences with the flowers clustered close to the peduncle and the bracts are relatively small (1.0 x 0.5 mm) and often lacking at upper nodes. In addition (although not a practical field character), no bacterial leaf endophytes are present in Bridsonia, whereas Vangueria has endophytes (Verstraete et al., 2013a, b). Open grassland and savannah, in full sun, but often partly concealed by grass at the height of the growing season. Plants receive rainfall mainly in summer, and the winters are dry and cool to cold, with some parts of the range of the species (notably the Highveld of Mpumalanga, South Africa) receiving heavy frost.
