Phyllopodium cordatum (Thunb.) Hilliard
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Annual herb, stems c. 50-300 mm long, simple to branched from the base, first stem erect, others decumbent, pilose, the hairs 0.5-1.5 mm long, retrorse to appressed on upper part, sometimes tending to spread on lower part, often glandular-puberulous as well on upper part, mostly leafy only in lower part. Leaves opposite or uppermost alternate, blade of lowermost few pairs 6-20(-30) x 3-12 mm, ovate to ovate-elliptic, abruptly or sometimes more gradually contracted into a petiolar part (2-)3-10(-13)mm long, smaller upwards and then sometimes narrowly elliptic or linear, margins obscurely to distinctly serrate, both surfaces pilose, hairs c. 1-2 mm long. Flowers up to c. 20 in small heads elongating into crowded racemes (lowermost flowers sometimes distant) solitary at the tip of nude scapes. Bracts c. 3-8 x 0.6-1.5(-3) mm, elliptic, oblong or subspathulate, adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, pilose, hairs 0.5-2 mm long, longest hairs on lower margins. Pedicels at base of inflorescence c. 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.5-1 mm long, anticous lobes 1.5-2.75 x 0.4-0.75 mm, pilose all over, hairs c. 0.4-1 mm long. Corolla tube 2-3 x 0.75-1 mm, limb 1.5-4.5 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.4-1 x 0.4-1 mm, anticous lobe 1-2 x 0.4-1.25 mm, all lobes elliptic oblong, palest cream-colour or white, possibly without any colour patterning other than the 2 upper lobes yellow, base of posticous lip bearded, the hairs sometimes extending to 2 or all 3 lobes of the anticous lip. Stamens 4, base of anticous filaments sometimes bearded with some hairs on the tube between the filaments, anthers 0.3-0.6 mm long, yellow. Stigma exserted. Capsules c. 3.5 x 2.5 mm Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.5 mm, obscurely angled, irregularly colliculate and wrinkled, pale cream-colour. Flowers between July and October, mainly in September. Hairy annual to 30 cm. Leaves mostly basal, ovate-elliptic, toothed. Flowers in small heads elongating into racemes on naked scapes, white or cream-coloured. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Diagnostic description

Phyllopodium cordatum typically has a few pairs of ovate petiolate leaves confined to the lower part of the stem, the upper part running out into a long nude scape bearing the terminal inflorescence. Sometimes the leaves tend to be more elliptic than ovate, and sometimes they may be more numerous and run up the scape, diminishing rapidly in size. The leaves and bracts are pubescent on both surfaces and this, together with the pale flowers devoid of colour patterning as well as the creamy-coloured seeds, will distinguish the species from P. heterophyllum (see also under that species). Phyllopodium cordatum is easily confused with P. mimetes, which also has the leaves crowded near the base of the plant and solitary heads on long peduncles; discriminating characters are given under P. mimetes (below). Habitat

It grows in sandy or stony places. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Distribution

Phyllopodium cordatum ranges from the neighbourhood of Van Rhynsdorp south to the Peninsula and east to about Albertinia, and inland as far as the Cedarberg and the Hex River valley; this is also the distributional range of its ally, P. heterophyllum. It is adventive in W Australia (Cunderdin, Whisson 1 and 2 (K) and Northam, Peirce s.n., K). From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae.
