Perennial herb, stock crowned with a rosette of leaves, flowering stems erect or decumbent, c. 20-60 cm tall, softly glandular-pilose, often branching low down into a corymbose panicle, a few distant reduced leaves in the lower part. Radical leaves 0.5-20 x 1.5-6 cm, subrotund, ovate or elliptic, narrowed to a flat petiole-like base, margins sub-entire, denticulate or more coarsely and often somewhat sinuately toothed, densely and softly glandular-pubescent. Heads campanulate, c. 10 x 10 mm across the flattened pappus. Involucral bracts c. 16-20, 7-9 mm long, calyculus bracts very few, short. Achenes hispid between the ribs, sometimes glabrescent. Not always sharply separable from var. crepidifolius, which characteristically lacks a basal rosette though one is sometimes present, has decumbent flowering stems densely leafy below the inflorescence branches, and heads racemosely rather than corymbosely arranged, opposed to the more erect, sparsely leafy flowering stems and spreading inflorescence of var. dichotomus.
