Flores [female] sessiles; bracteolae fere ut in [male]; receptaculum 3-3.5 mm longum obovoideum basi sensim angustatum costatum, costis exiguis, murinum opacum glabrum; achenium ad 2.5 mm longum oblongum; sepala 3 persistentia 2-2.3 mm longa 0.4 mm lata subacuta erecta extus sub apice dense canescenti-pilosa. A relatively isolated species taxonomically, it appears most similar to Cliffortia stricta or members of the C. eriocephalina group. It has a unique diagnostic character in that the sheaths are extended into a small (glandular?) often reddish point just beneath the insertion of the leaves. The species can therefore easily be distinguished, even when sterile. In flower, the large male flowers with numerous stamens separate this species from the above-mentioned species, which never have more than 15 stamens. Furthermore, only C. stricta shares a similar distribution and habitat, C. eriocephalina and its allies being restricted to high altitudes. From: Whitehouse, CM. 2021. A monograph on the genus Cliffortia. Strelitzia 43: 1-477. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
C. hirta is rather similar to C. eriocephalina, C. stricta and C. nitidula var. pilosa but differs by exhibiting longer and thicker pilosity on the branchlets, very long-hairy leaves, large [male]-flowers with about 20 stamens; it has also a bigger receptacle than the other species of the same group. Once widespread on the Cape Flats from Bokbaai north of Milnerton to Froggy Pond near Simonstown and east to Macassar, its range is now greatly reduced and is only found in a few isolated pockets of natural vegetation that remain. The species seems to grow only in the Cape Peninsula on lower levels and is here rather common. From: Weimarck, AH. 1934. Monograph of the genus Cliffortia. Hákan Ohlsson, Lund. [All rights reserved]
