Morphological description

Einjähriges, wenigästiges Kraut von (1.5-)4-14(-23) cm Höhe und (2-)8-20(-40) cm Durchmesser mit allen Übergängen zwischen kleinsten aufrechten, wenig verzweigten Formen, kompakten niedrigen Büscheln und grossen, schlaffen, ausgebreiteten Pflanzen. Hauptspross am Grunde bis 3 mm stark, ± aufrecht, nach 2-12 cm ein Köpfchen tragend. Seitenzweige niederliegend bis aufrecht, sparrig verzweigt. Stengel olivgrün bis hellbraun, oft violett überlaufen, leicht gefurcht, durch herablaufende Ölbehälter etwas gestreift, zerstreut bis dicht mit rechtwinklig abstehenden, dünnen, gegliederten Borstenhaaren besetzt, relativ wenig beblättert. Blätter unten gegenständig, oben allmählich wechselständig, unter den Köpfchen etwas gehäuft, oblanzeolat, zur Basis stielartig verschmälert, ganzrandig, (10-)14-28(-30) mm lang und (2-)4-5(-6) mm breit, helloliv, oft durch rötliche Ölbehälter unterbrochen gestreift, beiderseits abstehend kurzborstig behaart und mit wenigen kopfigen Drüsen besetzt. Köpfchen einzeln an den Zweigenden, fast sitzend, von einer Aussenhülle aus meist 5 Hochblättern (diese 3-5 x 0.5-1 mm) umgeben. Involucrum ca. 2-reihig, zunächst glockig, 5-7 mm im Durchmesser, während der Blütezeit zunehmend trichterig auseinanderspreizend, zur Reifezeit flach ausgebreitet, dann (10-)11-14 mm im Durchmesser. Hüllschuppen linealisch, graugrün, meist mit rötlich überlaufener Spitze, abstehend langborstig behaart, drüsig, mit harzigem Mittelnerv, nicht häutig berandet; die äusseren 4-7 x 0.4-0.8 mm, die inneren 6-7 x 0.5 mm, um die Achänen der Zungenblüten gefaltet. Gelegentlich eine folgende Reihe von Schuppen von 5-6 x 0.2-0.4 mm die Achänen der äusseren Röhrenblüten umschliessend. Spreuschuppen in der Mitte des Köpfchens fehlend bis auf Ausnahmen, dann ca. 3 x 0.2 mm gross. Köpfchenboden (7-)8-11(-12); Ligula schmal obovat, 2-2.5 mm lang und 0.5-0.7 mm breit, weiss; Röhre 1.4-1.7 mm lang, oft rötlich überlaufen, lang drüsig. Röhrenblüten 5-8(-12) zwittrige, meist in einer Reihe auf Lücke mit den Zungenblüten stehend, 1-5 männliche Blüten in der Mitte des Köpfchens einschliessend; Krone schmal gerade, 2-2.5 mm lang, weiss, im unteren Teil oft rot überlaufen und mit langen, schmalen Drüsen besetzt, oben mit 2-3 sehr kleinen Ölbehältern an den zur Innenseite des Köpfchens gewandten Einschnitten zwischen den Kronzipfeln; Griffelanhängsel kurz dreieckig (ca. 1:1), Antheren 0.5-0.7 mm lang. Pappus der inneren Röhrenblüten radiär, bestehend aus 5(-7) dicht gezähnten, 2.0-2.5 mm langen Borsten und ebensovielen alternierenden, 0.05-0.1 mm langen Schuppen; Pappus der äusseren Röhrenblüten zygomorph, bestehend aus 5(-8) Borsten von 1.5-2.0 mm Länge an der äusseren Schmalseite der Achäne und 1-5 oft ± verwachsenen, 0.1-0.5 mm langen Schuppen an der inneren Schmalseite; Pappus der Zungenblüten noch stärker zygomorph, oft nur aus einer einzigen 0.8-1.2 mm langen Borste an der äusseren und einer einzigen grossen, 0.5-1.0 mm langen Schuppe an der inneren Schmalseite bestehend; zwischen diesen Typen alle Übergänge. Pappusschuppen bei der Reife aufrecht stehen bleibend. Achänen obovat bis fast herzförmig, zur Basis deutlich verschmälert, mit dickem randlichem Wulst, auffallend gross, 3.0-3.7(-4.0) x 2.0-2.3 mm, beige, Epidermiszellen mit zapfenförmigen Fortsätzen. Achänenhaare bis 0.5 mm lang, meist leicht gebogen, an der Spitze zweikugelig verdickt. Stark behaarte Achänen der Zungenblüten und schwach behaarte Achänen der Röhrenblüten durch Auseinanderspreizen bei der Reife oft scheinbar abwechselnd nebeneinanderstehend. From: Rommel, A. 1977. Roughly hairy, sprawling annual, up to 150 mm tall. Leaves opposite below, alternate above, oblanceolate. Flowerheads disciform, solitary or in lax corymbs, sessile or shortly pedunculate; involucre cup-shaped, bracts linear, imbricate, bristle-haired and glandular, often red-tipped; outer female florets with reduced rays, white; disc florets few, bisexual, white. Diagnostic description

A. microglossus ist leicht kenntlich an den weit spreizenden Köpfchen mit kleinen Zungenblüten, extrem grossen Achänen und fehlenden Spreuschuppen zumindest in der Köpfchenmitte. Auch die überwiegend gegenständige Beblätterung kommt bei den annuellen Sippen der Gattung sonst nirgends vor.Die Art ist in jeder Beziehung innerhalb der Gattung am stärksten abgeleitet. Nur hier ist bis jetzt die Basiszahl x = 6 nachgewiesen, gekoppelt mit schneller Generationenfolge (in Kultur bis 3 Generationen pro Jahr) und Selbstfertilität. Die ausgeprägte Unterordnung unter die Einheit 'Köpfchen' tritt ebenfalls nur hier auf: im Zentrum männliche Blüten mit Griffeln ohne oder nur mit reduziertem Narbengewebe, dazu der zentrifugal zygomorph ausgebildete Pappus. Kleine Köpfchen mit Aussenhülle, kurze Zungenblüten, die trotz grosser Achänen kaum die Länge der Hüllschuppen erreichen, kurze Griffelanhängsel, kleine Antheren, gegenständige Beblätterung und fehlende Spreuschuppen im Innern des Köpfchens weisen ebenfalls auf eine junge Art hin.Die kleineren Schuppen, die oft die äusseren Röhrenblüten umgeben, sind nicht eindeutig zu bewerten. Fordert man für Hüllschuppen wie sonst in der Gattung eine Zunahme der Länge in aufeinanderfolgenden Reihen von aussen nach innen, so müssen diese meist kürzeren Schuppen als Spreuschuppen betrachtet werden, wie es wohl auch DE CANDOLLEs Auffassung war. A. microglossus besitzt einen deutlichen Verbreitungsschwerpunkt um Van Rhynsdorp. Lockere Ausstrahlungen erreichen im Nordwesten fast den Oranje, im Südosten die Kleine Karroo.
