Globulariopsis pumila Hilliard
CR Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Annual herb, perhaps sometimes perennating, taproot simple, stems wiry, several tufted from crown., c. 120-220 mm tall, erect or decumbent, very well branched and twiggy, pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long, recurved, upper parts leafy. Leaves opposite, alternate upwards, weakly fascicled, largest primary leaves 3-5 x 0.5-1 mm, narrowly elliptic, apex subacute, base slightly narrowed then abruptly expanded and half-clasping, margins entire, texture moderately thick, venation invisible, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long on margins and lower surface, upper surface glabrous; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescence a few-flowered raceme (glomerule) c. 4-6 x 5-7 mm in first flower, mostly solitary at tips of leafy twiglets or about 3-5 aggregated in a loose corymbose panicle. Bract adnate to pedicel only, lowermost 2.2-3 x 1-1.2 mm, elliptic, acute, concave, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long on margins, 0.15-0.2 mm on back, inner face glabrous. Pedicels up to 0.2-0.5 mm long. Calyx 1.5-1.8 mm long, campanulate, 5-lobed roughly halfway to base, 2 anticous lobes slightly larger than other three, all lobes deltoid, acute, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long on margins and outer surface, inner surface glabrous. Corolla tube 2-2.2 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 3.2-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.1-1.5 x 0.9-1 mm, anticous lobe 1.8-2.1 x 1.1-1.3 mm, all lobes elliptic, white, yellow patch down back of throat. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.7-1 mm long, anthers in throat or mouth, anticous filaments 1.2-2 mm long, anthers exserted. Stigma and style c. 2.7-3 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.3 mm. Coccus 1.5-1.7 x 1 mm, dark brown, held within persistent calyx. From: Hilliard, OM. 1999. The Tribe Selagineae (Scrophulariaceae). Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Annual to ± 22 cm. Leaves opposite below, weakly fascicled, narrowly elliptic, hairy beneath. Flowers in terminal glomerules, white, back of throat yellow, bracts hairy. Diagnostic description

It is allied to G. stricta but is easily distinguished inter alia by its much shorter corolla tube. Also, both bracts and calyx are glabrous on the inner face, not hairy as in G. stricta. Pillans' collection was misdetermined at Selago minutissima (now reduced to synonymy under S. divaricata), but it bears scant resemblance to that species because the glomerules are mostly borne singly, not in a long narrow pancicle, and of course in floral detail it is totally different.
