Crassula columnaris Thunb. subsp. columnaris
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Plants with leaf column (1.5-)2-3.5 mm in diameter, usually not branched. Leaves with rounded apices and often without dorsal ridges. Inflorescence with flowers often half hidden by leaves below. Corolla 7-13 mm long. Squamae spathulate to T-shaped, (1-)1.3-2 mm long. Carpels with almost conical ovaries gradually constricted into short slender styles, about one quarter as long as ovaries; ovary with 8-10(-12) ovules, each 0.2-0.3 mm long. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

A very variable taxon in which plants often occur in widely separated localities as is shown in the following main local forms: 1. In the south-western Great Karoo and the western Little Karoo the robust typical form produces petals (8-)9-12 mm long and the squamae are 1.6-2 mm long and gradually taper into the basal stalk. The leaf column is often constricted below the inflorescence as in subsp. prolifera. 2. Merging into the variation of the first form is the apparently stunted form from the eastern Little Karoo which produces a corolla 6-8(-9) mm long and squamae which are 1-1.2 mm long and are abruptly constricted into the stalk. In extreme forms the flowers are half hidden by leaves below the inflorescence. 3. In the northern Cedarberg and Gifberg plants are more slender, have a corolla 7.5-9 mm long and squamae 1.2-1.5 mm long and more or less abruptly constricted into the basal stalk. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Habitat

Growing on gentle slopes or in depressions often with quartzite gravel, rarely in shallow soil in rock crevices. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Distribution

Found in the Cape Province from near Calvinia mainly east of the south-western Cape mountains into the Little Karoo as far eastwards as Oudtshoorn as well as in the adjoining areas of the Great Karoo. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
