VU Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Plants 300-450 mm high, forming tufts. Stem usually unbranched, lightly compressed, bearing several sessile lateral flower clusters. Leaves several, mostly basal, linear, mostly 3-5 mm wide, firm and leathery. Flower clusters several, each (1)2- to 4-flowered; spathes greenish with translucent margins, 20-28 mm long, bracts dry-membranous, shorter than spathes. Flowers on pedicels 7-10 mm long, large, blue to pale mauve, outer tepals with transparent to translucent, light brown windows on lower margins; tepals 25-30 mm long, outer ± obliquely obovate, inner ± fiddle-shaped, slightly larger than outer. Filaments 5-6 mm long; anthers 7-8 mm long. Ovary cylindric-trigonous, 8-12 mm long; style 12-16 mm long, stigma lobes broad, spreading, deeply fringed. Capsules elongate, woody, indehiscent, deeply 3-lobed, 35-50 mm long. Seeds triangular-columnar, many per locule, arranged in a single vertical row. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

Aristea biflora is readily recognised by the large, pale blue to mauve flowers 50-60 mm diam. with the outer tepals asymmetric about the midline and each with a pair of transparent to slightly bronzed windows near the base. Seen from above the windows appear dark green or brown depending on lighting. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Habitat
