Very similar to Cliffortia polygonifolia var. polygonifolia, but greyish white in colour due to the long silky hairs on the leaves. C. lanata was identified based upon the even more densely hairy leaves, but under C. sericea, comments were made on the wide range of variation found within the species and it appears that Compton 8828 (NBG) is just at one extreme of that scale. At the other end of the scale, with less densely hairy leaves, are plants from Houw Hoek, that were identified as crosses with C. polygonifolia. Cliffortia sericea appears to begin flowering slightly earlier than C. polygonifolia and has a longer season. From: Whitehouse, CM. 2021. A monograph on the genus Cliffortia. Strelitzia 43: 1-477. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
C. lanata is a distinct type very much deviating from the other species of the section. The leaflets are entire and densely lanate with greyish white hairs. The species is on that account rather similar to certain forms of C. eriocephalina, a feature mentioned by the discoverer. The fruits are not fully ripe. As in C. polygonifolia and allied species the receptacles have 3 high, recurved wings. Furthermore, there occur 3 low wings alternating with the higher ones. From: Weimarck, AH. 1948. The genus Cliffortia, a taxonomical survey. Bot. Not. 90(2): 167-203. [All rights reserved] As: Cliffortia lanata Weim.
