Suffrutex, normally little-branched, flowering branches woolly, ± closely leafy below and less leafy above, older parts glabrous and nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves suberect-patent, linear- narrowly elliptic, 1-3(-6) cm long and (1-)1.5-2(-3) mm wide, mucronate or shortly acuminate, pungent, smooth and glabrous on upper side, impressedly mid-veined above. Corymbophore when fully-developed (5-)10-20(-25) cm long and 1.5-2.5 mm in diameter, densely woolly. Corymb 1.5-3(-7) cm wide. Peduncles 20 mm long, densely woolly. Capitula 12-flowered. Involucral bracts 18-25. Outer bracts narrowly elliptic-elliptic (-narrowly ovate), 3-4 mm long and 1-1.5 mm wide, light brown with deeper brown base and apex, often somewhat purplish in the middle, acute, outside and margins except apex white-sericeous. Middle bracts stipitate; claw narrowly elliptic-narrowly obovate, 2-3 mm long and c. 1 mm wide, light brown-light green, outside and margins sericeous-woolly; lamina circular or broadly elliptic-depressed obovate, 1.5-1.8 mm long and 1.5-2 mm wide, white, opaque, obtuse-truncate or somewhat emarginate. Inner bracts stipitate; claw narrowly elliptic-narrowly obovate, (1.5-)2.5-3 mm long and 0.5-1 mm wide, light brown-light green, outside and (especially) margins densely woolly; lamina circular-transversely broadly elliptic-depressed obovate, 1.5-2 mm long and 1-2 mm wide, white, opaque, obtuse-truncate or somewhat emarginate. Female floret(s) 1(-2). Corolla 2.2-2.5 mm long. Pappus bristles c. 10, normally as long as the corolla tube, otherwise as in male florets. Achene (narrowly) elliptic, (1.5-)1.8-2.1 mm long and 0.5-0.8 mm wide, deep brown, copiously white-woolly. Male florets 5-11. Corolla 2.5-3 mm long, often somewhat darker below the middle. Pappus bristles c. 15, normally as long as the corolla tube, whitish, flexuous, barbellate, somewhat broader towards the base, basally fused into an annulus. From: Lundgren, J. 1972. Revision of the genus Anaxeton Gaertn. (Compositae). Opera Bot. 31: 5-59. [All rights reserved]
White-woolly shrublet to 45 cm. Leaves linear with revolute margins, green and glabrous above. Flower heads discoid, small, many in dense, rounded clusters on long peduncles, yellow, bracts whitish, outer silky, ovaries woolly. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Asteraceae: Anaxeton Gaertn. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 351-352. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Flowering specimens seen from all months except July, October, and November. A. laeve is not very variable. It is a distinct species, easily recognized by its very smooth leaves, copiously white-woolly achenes, and long and flexuous pappus bristles in both types of florets. There is an obvious distinction in some morphological characters between collections from the Cape Peninsula and Caledon Division, respectively. There is great variation in length of leaf within the range of distribution. From: Lundgren, J. 1972. Revision of the genus Anaxeton Gaertn. (Compositae). Opera Bot. 31: 5-59. [All rights reserved]
The species grows on hillsides, often in rocky places, and has also been found in sandy banks. From: Lundgren, J. 1972. Revision of the genus Anaxeton Gaertn. (Compositae). Opera Bot. 31: 5-59. [All rights reserved]
