Muraltia acicularis Harv.
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

A somewhat decumbent undershrub up to 25 cm high. Young stems hirsute or tomentose, becoming rough later. Leaves acicular, shortly hairy or scabrous below, almost glabrous above, spine-tipped, the spine straight or reflexed, fasciculate: the primary 5.0-7.0 mm long, about the same width throughout: the secondary similar but more slender and narrowed at the base. Bracts 0.6-0.8 mm long, ovate, acute or obtuse, concave, ciliate. Flowers 4.0-5.0 mm long, pink, sessile. Sepals acute or acuminate, ciliate, glabrous or slightly rough outside: the outer concave, ovate: the inner slightly longer, almost flat, lanceolate, half to two-thirds the length of the side petals. Side petals narrow, broadest below the middle, turning upwards and outwards, appearing obliquely truncate when flattened, shorter than the carina. Claw of the carina a little shorter than or as long as the limb: the line of attachment of the crest short, the width of the crest not much less than the length of the carina, the upper and lower lobes more or less equal in size. Ovary with very short hairs on the horns: the anterior style branch minute or lacking, the posterior at right angles to the style, the stigma oblique. Capsule unknown. Very short hairs on the horns: the anterior style branch minute or lacking, the posterior at right angles to the style, the stigma oblique. Capsule unknown. From: Levyns, MRB. 1954.
