Bobartia anceps Baker
Indigenous

Morphological description

Plants (0.25-)0.50-1.10(-1.50) m high, usually forming tufts. Rhizome compact and corm-like, ± 10 mm diam. Stem formed by basal internode only, flattened or rarely subterete and elliptic in section, 3-6 mm wide, with fine stomatiferous furrows. Foliage leaves 2 to 6 in a basal fan, usually slightly shorter than flowering stem, resembling stem. Rhipidia 15 to 40, spreading, crowded in a dense rounded head, subtended by usually spreading, green, leaf-like bracts with narrow blade; pedicels 2-6(-10) mm long, subglabrous; rhipidial bracts and spathes firm-textured, bracts and lower spathe broadly lanceolate, 6-11 mm long, dark reddish brown, inner 13-15 mm long. Flowers yellow; tepals free or connate in a tube 4-7 mm long, elliptic, outer 18-32 x 9-15 mm, inner slightly smaller. Filaments 1.5-3.5 mm long; anthers ± 5 mm long. Ovary included, smooth; style 4-10 mm long, branches 5-6 mm long. Capsules included, subglobose to broadly oblong, smooth, 4-8(-10) mm long. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Diagnostic description

Distinguished from Bobartia macrospatha, the only other species in the genus with the ovary not exserted from the rhipidial spathes, by its flattened or subterete leaves and stem, 3-6 mm wide, mostly spreading, leaf-like spathe not expanded or enclosing the synflorescence, and the more numerous, spreading rhipidia densely clustered in a rounded head. The individual rhipidia are relatively small, with the inner spathe 13-15 mm long, and the capsules are also small, subglobose to broadly oblong, 4-8(-10) mm long. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Typical specimens (including the nomenclatural type) have distinctly flat leaves, a narrow green spathe, and a compact inflorescence with short spreading cymes; they seem indeed to be specifically distinct from B. macrospatha. When additional material is taken into consideration, however, there appears to be a gradual transition between the anceps type and the macrospatha type. In Garcia’s Pass there is a whole range of variation between the extremes, and individuals with distinctly flat and nearly terete leaves may even occur in the same population. Plants with the short spreading cymes characteristic of ssp. anceps occur in the Langebergen as far as Tradouw Pass; since they have almost terete leaves and an expanded fibrous spathe they have been referred to ssp. macrospatha, however. From: Strid, PAK. 1974. A taxonomic revision of Bobartia L. (Iridaceae). Opera Bot. 37: 1-45. [All rights reserved] As: Bobartia macrospatha Baker subsp. anceps (Baker) Strid
