Leaves petiolate, polymorphous (simple, pinnatifid, bi-pinnatifid or almost pinnati-partite), rigidly setose on both sides; scapes branching, pubescent or villous; umbels many-flowered, with bearded bracts; calyx softly pubescent, and sparsely villous, the tube about twice as long as the linear, subobtuse, broadly white-edged segments. Acaulescent geophyte, 0.08-0.25 m high; subterranean tuber clothed with dead petiole bases. Radical leaves polymorphous, simple pinnatifid, bipinnatifid or almost pinnatipartite; lamina 20-130 x 10-50 mm; hirsute with appressed, coarse hairs; petioles longer than blades. Inflorescences: scapes branched; pseudo-umbels showy, 4-many-flowered. Petals usually 5, dark purple-black, base white; posterior two 11 x 2.5 mm, anterior three 9 x 1.5 mm, margins conspicuously undulate. Fertile stamens 5. Flowering time Nov., Dec. Very inconstant in the shape of the leaves and colour of the petals, but all the forms agree in the rigid pubescence of the leaves, the plumoso-barbate bracts, and the linear, albo-marginate sepals.
