Geophyte, 90-250 mm high. Bulb ovoid, 10-20 mm in diameter, offset- and bulbil-forming, white; tunic multilayered, outer layers dark brown; inner cataphyll translucent green, loosely surrounding leaf bases, apex obtuse. Leaves 2, occasionally 1, narrowly lanceolate, 80-200 x 6-40 mm, spreading to suberect, canaliculate, glaucous or bright green, upper surface with faintly depressed longitudinal grooves, plain or heavily marked with green, brownish-magenta or purple blotches, midrib distinct on lower surface; leaf margins slightly coriaceous; leaf bases clasping, 10-60 mm long, white to light green, occasionally speckled with magenta; primary seedling leaf terete, erect. Inflorescence racemose, few- to many-flowered, lax, sterile apex short; scape erect, 60-140 mm long, lax to sturdy, light green, plain or heavily marked with large brownish-magenta blotches; rachis light green in lower two thirds, plain or with brownish-magenta blotches, upper third bright red, greenish-yellow or reddish-orange; pedicels 4-5 mm long, spreading or suberect, light green in lower part of inflorescence, reddish-orange or yellowish-orange above; bracts ovate at base of inflorescence, becoming lanceolate above, 2-6 x 1-3 mm, translucent white or light green. Perianth zygomorphic, tubular, pendulous; tube cylindrical, bright yellow or deep orange-red, 8-9 mm long; outer tepals oblong, 15-17 x 7-8 mm, bright yellow to greenish-yellow, plain or with bright reddish-orange bases; apical gibbosities prominent, bright green; inner tepals oblong obovate, 26-28 x 8-10 mm, bright yellow to greenish-yellow, apices spreading, broad, deep red or purplish red, margins white. Stamens included, straight; filaments yellowish-white, 25-27 mm long, pollen yellow. Ovary ellipsoid, 4-5 x 2-3 mm, light green; style straight, yellowish-white, 24-25 mm long, sturdy, thicker than filaments. Capsule ellipsoid, 9-14 x 5-9 mm. Bulbous geophyte, 5-31 cm. Leaves 1 or 2, lanceolate or lorate, plain or densely spotted with green or purple. In small clumps within larger colonies on north- and west-facing decomposing granite slopes, in gravelly sand or acid humus, in full sun or light shade, and in association with low succulent scrub and spring-flowering annuals.
